The summer after my sophomore year of college, I found myself in a courthouse basement, looking through the criminal histories of Denver's 15 most notorious Bloods. In a big step from the school newspaper, I'd been hired to help with background research on a book investigating the concerted effort among law enforcement and rival gangsters to take down an ex-Blood turned peace activist.
For the first time, I knew that my work was going to help society, that through telling a story I could help show people a new side of their city, a side they did not see. Since then, I've worked to improve my writing, photography and audio productions skills in an effort to reach audiences in any way that is convenient to them.
While I believe that a multimedia approach to journalism provides wonderful storytelling tools, I have also worked to learn the fundamentals of reporting through mentorship in traditional avenues. I've interned for two newspapers (The Colorado Springs Gazette and Reno Gazette-Journal) as well as Rock and Ice magazine. I've learned to write on deadline, navigate touchy interviews and work as part of a team.
Let's work together.
